Folks love Adafruit’s wide selection of RGB matrices and accessories for making custom colorful LED displays… and Adafruit RGB Matrix Shields and FeatherWings can be quickly soldered together to make the wiring much easier.

But what if we made it even easier than that? Like, no solder, no wiring, just instant plug-and-play? Dream no more – with the Adafruit Matrix Portal add-on for RGB Matrices, there has never been an easier way to create powerful internet-connected LED displays.

Solar Powered Weather Station with Adafruit IO #IoT #Weather #Solar @adafruit @adafruitio

Mark Komus built a solar-powered weather station that reports its recorded data to Adafruit IO, our easy-to-use IoT platform for everyone. A BME280 sensor monitors temperature, pressure and humidity. Sparkfun’s weather gauges are mounted at the top of the metal pole.

Live weather data is displayed on an Adafruit IO dashboard (public and view-able at this link). This project was also shown-off and discussed in more detail on our weekly Show and Tell this past Wednesday.

DIY License Plate Reader

Earlier this year Rober Lucian Chiriac wrote about creating a DIY device that can recognize and read license plates. The plate reader utilizes a combination of on-device and cloud computing to work in real-time. The hardware for the project includes a Raspberry Pi, Pi camera, 4G antenna, and a GPS antenna. These items are housed in a DIY 3D printed case designed by @robertlchiriac.

UTi165 Thermal Fever Scanner Camera

How to use your precision fever scanner camera

This video camera takes photos of temperatures! This camera is specifically tuned to work in the 30˚C~45˚C / 86˚F~113˚ F range with 0.5˚C / 1˚ F accuracy, so it’s excellent for human temperature & fever detection. In fact, this thermal camera is often used by companies/airports/hotels/malls to do a first-pass fever check: If any person has a temperature of over 99˚F an alarm goes off so you can do a secondary check with an accurate handheld temperature meter. NEW GUIDE: Stream Deck controlled RGB Message Panel using Adafruit IO #Adafruit #AdafruitLearningSystem #AdafruitIO @elgatogaming @Adafruit @MakerMelissa

A new guide in the Adafruit Learning System: Stream Deck controlled RGB Message Panel using Adafruit IO.

If you’ve ever done any live video streaming before, you may have heard of the Stream Deck. It allows you to customize the live streaming experience for your viewers such as showing the number of viewers, running custom keyboard commands, or showing animations. It allows you to customize the buttons too with whatever graphics you want.

But did you know there’s other non-streaming uses for the Stream Deck such as controlling lights in a house, open applications, or open web pages in a browser window? You can even write custom plugins to extend the capabilities.

This project uses a custom Stream Deck plugin to communicate directly with the Adafruit IO REST API. It works by posting a specific value to a feed and each button will post a different value to the feed allowing you to easily change messages.

Counterfeit glue, rat poison, and international trade #makerbusiness

Planet Money’s most recent episode (#900!) tells a roller-coaster ride of international intrigue and counterfeit manufacturing.

The episode is a lot of fun and takes a few interesting turns (especially for a show about a glue company), but it also does a good job highlighting how complex the trade network is, and how hard it is for U.S. companies to deal with Chinese counterfeits. Spoiler alert, the story ends well for ABRO, but not all companies are so fortunate.
