3D Printing News Briefs: June 8, 2019

In this week’s 3D Printing News Briefs, we’re talking about partnerships, new software and buildings, and a neat 3D printed miniature. Together, Evolve Additive Solutions and Evonik are developing materials for the STEP process, while Awexim has partnered with Farsoon in an exclusive sales agreement, and SHINING 3D and 3D Systems released Geomagic Essentials. Oerlikon inaugurated its new R&D and production facility, and a Reddit user posted video of a miniature 3D printed steering wheel that fits on a video game controller.

Evonik and Evolve Partnering to Develop 3D Printing Materials

A little over a year ago, Stratasys spinoff company Evolve Additive Solutions emerged from stealth with its production-scale additive manufacturing STEP (selective thermoplastic electrophotographic process) solution. Now, the company is partnering up with the Evonik Corporation, a leading specialty chemicals company, in a joint development agreement to formulate the thermoplastic 3D printing materials for STEP solutions. Initial efforts will be focused on polyamide 12, PEBA, transparent polyamide, and polymer for the polyamide 6 series, and the two companies also plan to create a wider range of production materials for STEP users in the future.

“Evolve’s entirely new technology approach will allow us to expand the range of applications of our high-performance powder materials, which are produced through a unique production process,” said Thomas Grosse-Puppendahl, the Head of the Additive Manufacturing Innovation Growth Field at Evonik. “With more than 20 years of experience in 3D printing, we will also develop a wider range of customized powder formulations to unlock the full potential of the STEP technology.”

Farsoon and Awexim Sign Exclusive Sales Agreement

Another 3D printing partnership has Farsoon Europe GmbH, which is located in Stuttgart, signing an Exclusive Sales Agreement with Warsaw-based Awexim, which was founded in 1991 as a technical consulting and cutting tools supplier. Awexim’s 3D printing adoption as an official Farsoon Europe sales agent will support Poland’s industrialization of 3D printing with Farsoon’s Open Laser Sintering Systems.

“Farsoon’s strength in industrial Laser Sintering Systems, ideally supports our strategy to enter into the 3D Printing market. We support industrial customers in Poland for almost 30 years with top quality tools, machine tools and especially top quality technical and customer service. We are glad to start cooperation with such solid partner as Farsoon, whose approach and vision is similar to ours,” said Andrzej Wodziński, the Managing Director of Awexim. “This cooperation opens huge possibilities to bring even more solutions for our customers on solving their needs. 3D printing is a future of industry, and we are sure, that connection of Farsoon and our team will have big influence on this industry in Poland.”

SHINING 3D and 3D Systems to Deliver Geomagic Essentials

Chinese company SHINING 3D recently announced that it has partnered up with 3D Systems to launch a new cost-effective scan-to-CAD solution. The two released Geomagic Essentials on the market as a bundled offering along with SHINING 3D’s most recent handheld, multi-functional 3D scanner: the Einscan Pro 2X series.

The Einscan Pro 2X and 2X Plus are lightweight and compact, with faster scanning speeds and higher accuracy. The new Geomagic Essentials bundled offer only increases these capabilities, as the solution is perfect for downstream reverse engineering and scan-to-print applications. While many CAD software programs are limited in terms of what they can do in processing, Geomagic Essentials makes the scan data compatible with native CAD workflows, so designers wanting to integrate part design and 3D scan data can do so with ease.

Oerlikon Inaugurates New R&D and Production Facility

Technology company Oerlikon is based in Switzerland, but it has 170 locations in nearly 40 different countries, including the US. The company provides surface solutions, equipment, and materials processing, and as part of its continuing growth strategy here, recently celebrated the opening of its new $55 million, state-of-the-art Innovation Hub & Advanced Component Production facility in Huntersville, North Carolina. This is Oerlikon’s second location in the state, and the 125,000 sq ft, fully functional facility employs about 60 people and will continue to gradually add jobs as the business continues to expand.

“We are already working with customers in the aerospace, automotive, energy and medical industries in the US, and we anticipate continued growth in those sectors, as well as in others. We believe that additive manufacturing can transform production in many industries, and we are excited that our presence here in North Carolina allows us to better demonstrate those possibilities to our customers,” said Dr. Sven Hicken, Head of Oerlikon’s Additive Manufacturing business.

State and federal officials spoke at the inauguration event, which was attended by employees and their families, in addition to business leaders and customers. Oerlikon presented a local robotics club with a check at the event in order to begin growing collaborations with academic institutions and show support for STEM learning.

3D Printed Steering Wheel

Reddit user Malespams recently posted a video of a 3D printed steering wheel in action, but not one for a regular-sized car…or even a car at all, actually. No, this miniature green wheel is made to attach to the controller for a video game system, like XBox, to make it easier and more natural to play racing games. However, not everyone who commented on the video thought that the 3D printed mod would make these games easier. One person said that it would offer “zero control” during play, and another noted that it covered the controller’s right stick and would make it hard to press any buttons,

“I have one, but while it’s a fun concept it covers the dpad so if you’re playing horizon you can’t access Anna m. Sometimes it hits the clutch and messes me up,” user 3202 people wrote. “It’s sometimes fun and I could see people having fun if they got used to it.”

CES 2019: SHINING 3D Showcased Latest 3D Printing, Scanning, and Digitizing Solutions

CES 2019 came to a close on Friday in Las Vegas, and from all of the announcements we’ve heard recently, the show floor was a pretty impressive place to be last week. Top Chinese 3D printing and digitizing company SHINING 3D was also at CES, on hand to show off its latest 3D scanning and digitizing solutions.

Founded in 2004, the company was China’s first listed OTC stock company in the 3D digitizing and 3D printing industries segment. SHINING 3D creates, manufactures, and commercializes a large range of 3D technologies, including 3D printers, an online 3D cloud platform, 3D scanners for multiple industries and applications, 3D materials, and 3D design and manufacturing services. In addition to Hangzhou, the company also has facilities in Germany and the US.

At last year’s CES, the company introduced two new accessories for its popular EinScan Series of 3D scanners. This year at the event, SHINING 3D showcased its EinScan Pro 2X series of multi-functional handheld 3D scanners, which were first introduced in November at formnext 2018. In addition, the company also introduced an all-inclusive array of solutions that cover “3D Digitizing – Design & Simulation – Additive Manufacturing” for several different industries.

The EinScan Pro 2X and EinScan Pro 2X Plus 3D scanner models have higher quality data and an increased scanning speed: able to process up to 1,500,000 points per second (30 fps) under the Handheld Rapid Scan Mode. In addition, with a more optimized interface and workflow and enhanced algorithm in the new EXScan Pro software, the 3D scanner series makes it possible to scan objects of varying sizes much more quickly and easily. These two new 3D scanners, along with add-ons and the rest of SHINING 3D’s EinScan series, were displayed at CES 2019.

At the show last week, the company also showcased the results of its expanding collaborations with several of its partners. For instance, SHINING 3D is partnering with Siemens PLM Software on a new product development solution. The Solid Edge SHINING 3D Edition makes it possible to use simulation, reverse engineering, and generative design together with CAD tools in the same platform.

Additional partner solutions presented at CES 2019 include:

  • Virtual Display Solution – ability to easily generate and create high-quality 3D models with full-color texture.
  • Human Body 3D Scanning Solution – applied in orthotics, prosthetics, footwear, custom made equipment, etc.
  • Art & Culture Solution – applied in digital archiving, restoration of cultural relics, recreation of sculpture work, etc.
  • The Solution for Education – offers the education bundle from 3D scanning to 3D printing, inspiring the next generation through 3D technology.
  • Revolutionary Nail Scan Solution – brings new opportunities and innovations for the nail beauty industry. Visitors to SHINING 3D’s booth were able to experience a new nail 3D scanning experience.

Shining 3D Introduces New Software and New 3D Scanning Possibilities with EinScan Pro 2X and EinScan Pro 2X Plus

At formnext last week, Shining 3D was among the companies unveiling new products to the world. The EinScan-Pro has been one of Shining 3D’s most popular products ever since it was introduced nearly three years ago, and it was followed up last year by the EinScan-Pro+. Now the company is extending its line of handheld 3D scanners further with the EinScan Pro 2X and 2X Plus.

“Based on the feedback received from thousands of users and the valuable input of SHINING 3D’s own R&D team, the EinScan Pro 2X & 2X Plus deliver substantial improvements on scan speed, accuracy and function,” said Oscar Meza, VP of Global Sales at SHINING 3D. “Making a dramatic breakthrough in scanning speed and data quality, the EinScan Pro 2X series is aimed to improve the efficiency in generating high-quality 3D models.”


3D scanners have come a long way from the large, unwieldy contraptions they used to be, and Shining 3D has been one of the companies at the forefront of truly portable scanners. The EinScan Pro 2X and 2X Plus are especially lightweight and compact, making for easy travel as well as plug-and-play installation. The two new scanners also offer faster scanning than their already speedy predecessors, processing up to 1,500,000 points per second (30 fps) under Handheld Rapid Scan Mode. They also boast high accuracy – single scan accuracy in Fixed Scan Mode is up to 0.04 mm. When using markers, the volumetric accuracy under handheld scanning modes is up to 0.05+0.3 mm/m.

The EinScan Pro 2X and 2X Plus are capable of capturing fine details. Under Handheld Rapid Scan and Handheld HD Scan modes, the minimum point distance is up to 0.02 mm, allowing for high-resolution data. Both scanners have multiple modes of operation, including Handheld Rapid Scan, Handheld HD Scan, Fixed Scan with turntable and Fixed Scan without turntable. They offer several alignment modes as well, including feature alignment, markers alignment, turntable coded targets alignment and manual alignment.

In addition, the EinScan Pro 2X and 2X Plus offer several optional add-ons, like the Color Pack, Industrial Pack and HD Prime Pack for multiple scanning applications.

The new 3D scanners were not the only products Shining 3D introduced last week; the company also has new software to offer. The EXScan Pro software features a brand new user interface and work flow that is easy to use regardless of experience level – it’s as easy as taking a video, according to Shining 3D. A new operation mode allows for a faster scanning experience during operation; users can then set the resolution option later during data processing. The software is compatible with several file types including STL, OBJ, PLY, ASC, P3 and 3MF.

Also now available is Solid Edge Shining 3D Edition software, the product of a collaboration between Siemens PLM Software and Shining 3D. It includes reverse engineering, generative design and simulation along with CAD tools in a single platform.

“The integration of Solid Edge SHINING 3D Edition, EinScan 3D scanners and 3D printer enables users a complete solution covering 3D digitize – design & simulate –additive manufacturing,” said Meza. “It will significantly improve the efficiency and quality for designers, engineers and researchers.”
