New Guide: Frozen-Inspired Temperature-Sensing Pendant

Elsa with her Gizmo

The latest tutorial from Erin St. Blaine will teach you how to make a Frozen II inspired pendant for your young maker friend (or for you and your own sweet style) featuring elemental images that change based on the temperature of the air. The TFT Gizmo inside the pendant will display a snowflake when it’s cold, a spinning leaf image when it’s warm, and a lovely purple flame when it’s hot. From the guide:

Discover your inner Snow Queen with this temperature sensing pendant. Invoke the elements of snow, air, and fire using your breath or body heat (or your Ice Queen Superpowers). The pendant will display a snowflake, a spinning leaf, or a lovely purple flame animation depending on the warmth of the air.

Inspired by the elemental spirits in Disney’s Frozen II movie, this pendant will be sure to inspire and excite any Queen Elsa fans, and add an element of magic to your cosplay or halloween costume.

This project uses Adafruit’s TFT Gizmo, a Circuit Playground Bluefruit, and a 3d printed case. There’s no soldering or coding involved — just a few screws to tighten, and a couple files to upload — so it’s a wonderful beginner project if you’re just starting out in the world of electronic cosplay, or if you have a young helper who’s getting interested in making stuff.

Bin Day Indicator Alerts You to Take Out the Rubbish

Bindaycator800

Via Hackaday:

The project consists of a 3D-printed model of a typical council wheelie-bin. Printed in white filament, the bin is translucent enough to glow when lit by powerful WS2812B LEDs. Having four LEDs both helps fill the entire model with an even light, as well as allows the bin to display multiple colors in different segments. This means that if it’s green bin day, the bin glows green. If it’s the day for the red and blue bins, the indicator will light up segments in red and blue.

Blooming Time: A Mechanical Flower

Beautiful project-in-progress from Samantha Song up on Hackster.io.

When I was young, I loved to play with plants, and one of my favourites is the mimosa plant, which will close when touched. However, in fantasy tales, flowers would open when they are touched, and I wanted to recreate this magical effect in my project.

With the 1 year anniversary of my boyfriend and I nearing, I wanted to dedicate to him a special present that I made myself, hence the birth of this flower. As both of us are forgetful people, I wanted the flower to remind us of special days, with the flower lighting up in a colour for each important day. On each day of the week, one of the petals will light up, reminding you of the day of the week in a unique and fun way. Not only is it a beautiful timepiece, when the flower is touched and “open”, it will also tell you the temperature, humidity, date etc., giving it a useful daily function.

Party Safe This Summer With a Arduino Blood-Alcohol Reactive LED Cup

FI49UU8JWGNSF3A LARGE

This clever cup will track how many drinks you have had and calculates your blood alcohol content so that you can stay healthy.

Via cponce_uncc on Instructables:

In the United States and across the world, alcohol has posed severe health threats when consumed in an irresponsible way…The question for this project is as makers, how can we address this problem and make sure fun celebrations with alcohol like parties can stay safe and fun?

My answer to this question was to find a way to estimate and then visualize the predicted BAC of the user to allow them to better understand what state they were in. For this project, I used the Arduino microcontroller with a water-level sensor, LED ring, and an LCD screen to track how many drinks a person has consumed, and then to find a way to estimate the blood-alcohol content (BAC) of the user based on sex and weight. The estimated BAC, depending on what range it was in, determines the animation of the LED ring below.

Legend of Zelda Rupee Nightlight

FHXLE0EJTON2MT1 LARGE

Excellent night light for any Zelda Fan. Shared by mportatoes on Instructables:

I’ve always been a huge Legend of Zelda fan (my last instructable was a Majora’s Mask replica with flashing LEDs). Wanting to make my first 3D print, I used Tinkercad and started with something simple – a box/case. After looking through some saved items on Thingiverse, I wanted to try making a night light for my daughter (w/ a touch of my nerdiness). So, I ended up making a nightlight with rupee colors from A Link to the Past.

Every Thursday is #3dthursday here at Adafruit! The DIY 3D printing community has passion and dedication for making solid objects from digital models. Recently, we have noticed electronics projects integrated with 3D printed enclosures, brackets, and sculptures, so each Thursday we celebrate and highlight these bold pioneers!

Have you considered building a 3D project around an Arduino or other microcontroller? How about printing a bracket to mount your Raspberry Pi to the back of your HD monitor? And don’t forget the countless LED projects that are possible when you are modeling your projects in 3D!
